What "No Download" Means Technically

Every website downloads something: the page itself, a stylesheet, a script. What "no download" means here is that nothing is installed. There is no setup file to run, no administrator prompt, no browser extension and no plugin. The game is a short script that your browser runs inside the page, in the same sandbox every website runs in. It cannot reach your files, it does not ask for your camera, location or notifications, and closing the tab stops it completely.

Two things do stay in your browser between visits. The browser caches the page files, as it does for every site, so the board appears faster next time. And the game writes your own results to the browser's local storage: best times per difficulty, win and game counts, the daily streak, unlocked achievements and a few settings such as your theme. That record belongs to the browser, not to an account, unless you choose to sign in to the optional sync between devices. Clearing the site data in your browser settings wipes it.

Browser Version vs. the Windows Store App

Windows stopped including the classic Minesweeper with Windows 8. Today, Windows users who search for it are pointed to Microsoft Minesweeper in the Microsoft Store. That app is a perfectly good game, but it is a different experience from the one many people are looking for: it has to be installed, it carries advertising unless you pay to remove it, and features such as its daily challenges expect you to sign in with a Microsoft account. On a work or school PC where the Store is disabled, it is not an option at all.

This page goes the other way. It keeps the 1990s board: the three original sizes, the silver bevels, the mine counter and the smiley. It adds only things that make the game better without getting in the way, such as a guaranteed safe first click, chording on a single click, a no-guess mode where every board is solvable by logic and a daily board that everyone in the world plays. None of it requires an account.

Works on Mac, Linux, Chromebooks and Phones

There has never been a built-in Minesweeper on macOS, and most Linux desktops do not ship one either. A browser version solves that without any porting: if the device has a current version of Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Edge, the board runs. The controls adapt to the device:

  • Mouse: left-click reveals, right-click flags, middle-click or a click on a satisfied number chords, Space flags or chords under the pointer, F2 starts a new game.
  • Mac trackpad: a two-finger click, or Control and click, places a flag.
  • Phone or tablet: tap reveals, a long press flags, and a Dig / Flag switch under the board lets every tap place a flag when you prefer that.

Chromebooks have a few quirks of their own, such as the Alt and click right-click; the Chromebook Minesweeper guide covers them.

Optional: Keep It as an App

If you play often, you can install the site as a web app from Chrome or Edge, through the install icon in the address bar or the browser menu. It then has its own icon, opens in its own window and keeps working offline once it has been loaded. This is still not a download in the usual sense: the browser reuses the same page and the same cached files, and removing the app takes one click. On iPhone and iPad, adding the page to your home screen from Safari's share menu gives you a similar shortcut.

Put It on Your Own Page

Because the game is just a web page, it can also live inside other pages. Teachers, bloggers and intranet editors can use the Minesweeper embed code generator to create an iframe snippet with the board size and theme they want, and paste it into a site, a class page or a knowledge base. Visitors still install nothing.

No-Download Minesweeper FAQ

Does "no download" mean nothing is saved on my device?

Nothing is installed. Like any web page, your browser caches the page files so it loads faster next time, and the game keeps your best times, streak and achievements in the browser's local storage. Clearing your site data removes all of it.

Does it work on a Mac, on Linux or on a phone?

Yes. It runs in any current browser, including Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge, on macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS. Phones and tablets use tap to reveal and long-press to flag.

How is this different from the Microsoft Store Minesweeper?

The store app has to be installed on Windows and ties its extras to a Microsoft account. This page installs nothing, asks for no sign-in, works on any operating system, and keeps the classic board with its original sizes.

Can I still get it as an app?

Optionally. In Chrome and Edge you can install the site as a web app with its own window, and it then keeps working offline. That is a choice, not a requirement: the regular page plays exactly the same.
